Some of what I build,
I give away.

Not everything here was built to order. Some of it I made for my own reasons, and once it works, handing the same thing to everybody else costs me nothing — so I release it. That is my decision about my own work, and free means free.

FIRST ONE OUT

HorseDex

A health journal for a horse. You write down what you did and what you saw; it keeps the record and shows it back to you over time. I built it for one person. Rebuilding it so anyone else could use it cost me nothing, so I am releasing it rather than charging for it.

  • No account to create and no server of mine — the records stay on your devices, and sync and backup go to your own iCloud, never to me
  • Out on the App Store since 26 August 2026, free, for iPhone, iPad and Mac
The Log screen: date, time and part of day at the top, then general observations — appetite, drinking, droppings, urination, energy, behaviour — each set to Not noted until you fill it in.The Report screen: a range picker set to This week, and a summary counting six days logged, twelve entries, six turnouts and twelve feeds, each marked steady.The Track screen: weight tracking showing a 522kg tape estimate beside a 536kg weighbridge reading, then body condition score and worm egg count, each stated as a record rather than a diagnosis.The Care screen: an open episode for left fore lameness running fifteen days, and a care register showing the farrier due in nine days and physio in thirty-three.

What free actually means here

  • No price, no trial period, no tier above it
  • No account, unless the thing genuinely cannot work without one
  • No adverts and no data collection to make up the difference
  • No nag screen suggesting you upgrade to the real version

Why I do it on purpose

This is the front door. The released work is how people find out whether I am any good — a far more honest demonstration than a case study written by the person being assessed.

The commissions follow from it. That is the whole arrangement, and I would rather state it plainly than pretend there is no strategy behind giving things away.

THE LINE

Where free stops

Free applies to what I have already decided to release. The moment something has to be built, extended or maintained because you asked for it, it is a commission — priced properly, and ending with the whole thing in your hands. There is no version of that where asking makes it free.
